Extending north and south, alongside the Japan Sea, agricultural lands range over the Subprefecture creating an aerial view akin to the teeth of a comb. Maximizing the different natural conditions between the southern and northern parts, many types of agriculture are practiced in the district: dairy farming, rice farming, dry field farming, vegetable farming, fruits farming and more.
Communities south of Enbetsu are mainly engaged in rice, dry field and vegetable farmings. Rumoi is highly appreciated as one of the Hokkaido’s best place for producing high quality rice.
The district’s preferable climate also helps to produce “clean” vegetables. These vegetables are shipped to many markets in Hokkaido and Honshu (Japan’s main island) and, similarly to rice, are highly appreciated by consumers.
Meanwhile Mashike Town grows apples, cherries, pears and grapes, and many other kinds of fruit, making the town one of Hokkaido’s leading fruit-producing sites.
